For many people Christmas is a time for excess and indulgence: whether it is spending lots of money, eating lots of food, drinking lots of alcohol, watching lots of television, getting stressed from all the various pressures that society and ourselves place upon us, or a crazy combination of the above.
What a fantastic time though to generate some excess in some other more positive and worthwhile ways that will potentially have a long term impact on the lives of others less fortunate or in need?!
Give to charity, donate to a food bank, help at a soup kitchen, give clothes and toys to a charity shop or fill a shoebox with gifts for less privileged children. There are so many ways that we can help others, especially at this time of year and the benefits felt at Christmas time from these activities must surely be enhanced.
For those in the area, Corrymeela's Christmas Open Day is on Saturday 12th December 2-5pm and they are accepting food bank donations, amongst many other things and we will certainly be taking along our contribution.
Take a moment during the build-up to the festivities to have a think about the causes that are around you and interest you and see what you can do to give someone in need an extra special Christmas present. Remember it's not about the scale or financial value of the gesture as the smallest offering can make a huge difference.
